Boat Yard Rules

To all contractors/sub-traders/owners/captains/skippers and tenants:

Please see attached updated rules and regulations which are now mandatory as of April 1, 2012. All visitors must report to the boatyard office. The rules and regulations must be signed along with your insurance and WCB documents. Once on file, you do not need to sign in again. Please send all renewal documents by fax to 604-408-0112.

BOAT YARD OFFICE (604)685-6924



1. All fiberglass, paint stripping or power sanding work must be properly covered and sealed. In addition, a tarp is required on the ground to protect the boat yard grounds.

At the end of each day or each time the tarp is moved, the area under and around the tarp must be vacuumed or swept up and all debris removed.

2. All work must be carried out in a safe and professional manner. All tenants, sub trades people are required to comply with WCB rules and regulations. Owners/Skippers are required to ensure any trades people have adequate liability insurance and are current with WCB. Owners/Skippers are also expected to engage in safe work practices.

The Granville Island Boat Yard reserves the right at its sole discretion to stop unsafe work practices and if deemed necessary to order the offending worker(s) to leave the site at the Owners/Skippers sole risk and expense.

3. At the end of every work day or session, always clean up your area. Failing to do so will result in a clean up fee of $65 and will be enforced by Granville Island Boatyard staff as this has been an ongoing problem.

4. For all customers who do not have charge privileges at the Granville Island Boat Yard the invoice and/or bill must be paid in full prior to launch.

5. All trades people who are not tenants of Maritime Market & Marina Ltd must present proof of insurance, WCB coverage in order to perform work within the boat yard. Please provide copies to the marina office prior to the boat being lifted. To keep this boatyard operating in a safe, clean, and professional manner, outside professionals MUST comply with the following rules & regulations.

a. Current certificate of public liability insurance (minimum $2 million)
b. Current Worker’s Compensation coverage.
Work must be done in a safe manner, in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations, to provide for the safety of property and the safety of contractor personnel, boatyard personnel, and the general public. Work sites must be kept clean and orderly. Work that could create a hazard to people or property must be appropriately delineated to prevent injury or property damage. Use of any unsafe equipment is against Marina policy. All accidents must be reported to the boatyard office.

6. All water hoses must have nozzles. When you are finished with the water hoses, turn them off and place them back neatly in the area you found them.

7. Oils and antifreeze must be placed in the correct containers in the barn. Dispose of paint cans, drop and wind clothes, oil, anti- freeze, gasoline, diesel, solvents, paint, bilge water, cleansers, and other hazardous waste in a lawful manner, (See boatyard office for help). Please clean up after your pets and keep the area under your boat clean.

8. All boatlift appointments must be on time, failing to do so may result in possible re-booking.

9. There is absolutely NO PARKING in the boat yard. Vehicles left parked in the boat yard or on the side deck will be towed away at the owner’s expense.

10. Only boat yard staff may adjust boat stands. Do not under any circumstances adjust these stands yourself. No jacking up of vessels is permitted. Anyone breaking these rules may be banned from the Boatyard at the discretion of management in addition to being fined. If any loose or misplaced blocking is noticed please report to boatyard staff immediately.

11. Under no circumstances may sailboats raise their sails while blocked in the boat yard. The raising of sails is strictly prohibited while the vessel is on blocks in the yard. No one shall ever go aloft while on yard property.

12. Only environmentally friendly boat soap is to be used for cleaning.

13. Paint and epoxy must be mixed over a tarp and any spills must be cleaned up immediately.

14. Owner/skipper is responsible for ensuring lift slings are placed away from gear that could be damaged, i.e. propeller, propeller shaft, etc. Granville Island Boat Yard is not responsible for sling damage.

15. Owner/skipper must inform Granville Island Boat Yard staff of all specific requirements regarding the vessel prior to being hauled or blocked. The position of the vessel in the yard is up to yard management.

16. Granville Island Boat Yard has the right to move or re-arrange any vessel without notice at any time.

17. Granville Island Boat Yard is not responsible for any theft or loss of items left on or around vessel.

18. With regard to noise outside of the scope of work not being completed, i.e. radio/stereo volume, please be respectful of neighboring boat owners tenants.

19. Smoking will not be tolerated within the confines of the Red Barn.

20. Granville Island Boatyard shall not be liable for any damage to a vessel resulting from such vessel’s inability to withstand haul out and launch due to age or construction deficiencies. Granville Island Boatyard shall not be liable for damage to wooden vessels. Not responsible for Sling Damage.

21. All persons wishing to enter the boatyard for any reason do so entirely at their own risk.

Violation of the above Rules and Regulations will result in a penalty of $100.00 per violation per day, which must be paid prior to the launching of the vessel.

I have read and agree to be bound by these Rules and Regulations of the Granville Island Boat Yard as stated which are subject to change. If there are any discrepancies between the web version and the posted version in the Boatyard office, the latest version is the current one. All efforts are made to keep the website version up to date.
