A Working Boatyard in the Heart of the City

Most boatyards are outside the city. You trailer your boat out, leave it with someone you've never met, and hope for the best. Granville Island Boatyard is different. We're in False Creek, ten minutes from downtown Vancouver, surrounded by the marine community that uses this waterfront every day.

The yard is built around a 50-metric-ton variable-width travel lift capable of handling vessels up to 75 feet in length. That capacity covers the vast majority of recreational and commercial vessels on this coast. We offer round trip haul-outs, one-way lifts for quick inspections, surveys, or repairs, same-day quick lifts, and after-hours emergency service for situations that cannot wait.

Several independent marine businesses operate within the yard, covering engine repair, fiberglass and gelcoat, rigging, yacht brokerage, salvage, fabrication, and a full-service marine dealership. When your boat is in the yard, you have access to all of them. That combination of lift infrastructure and on-site specialists in one location is what makes this yard worth the trip from anywhere in the Lower Mainland.

Responsible Yard Operations Since Day One

The boatyard has operated a Marina Wash Treatment System for over 20 years, installed as part of the False Creek Cleanup Program. Every drop of wash water that leaves a pressure washing job on our pad is captured, filtered, and treated before it enters the sewage system. Nothing goes over the seawall.

This is not a marketing claim. It is infrastructure we invested in because False Creek is where we work and we intend to keep it clean. For boat owners who care about the waterway, it is one more reason to bring your vessel to this yard.

Yard Rules and Regulations

All vessels arriving at the yard and all persons working within it must follow our yard rules. A signed copy of the full regulations is required before any haul-out or work commences. Read these before your first visit.

What are the general conduct rules?

All persons on the boatyard premises must conduct themselves in a safe, professional manner. Respect for other vessel owners, contractors, and yard staff is expected at all times. Any person found in violation of yard rules may be asked to leave the premises or be subject to a fine.

Can I work on my own boat?

Yes. You are welcome to work on your own vessel while it is in the yard. All work must follow the yard rules, particularly around cleanup and waste disposal. We provide designated disposal drums for contaminants including oil, antifreeze, fuel filters, and absorbent pads.

Can I bring my own contractor to work on my boat?

Yes, with conditions. All contractors and tradespeople must present proof of insurance and WCB coverage to the yard office before work begins. Copies must be provided prior to the vessel being lifted.

What are the rules around sanding and painting?

There is no open sanding or grinding permitted anywhere on site. All fiberglass, painting, or sanding work must be properly covered and sealed, and a tarp or ground sheet is required to prevent paint and debris from falling on the yard surface. Paint debris must not be flushed with a hose.

How do I dispose of waste materials?

The yard provides designated disposal drums for contaminants including oil and antifreeze. Posted signs above each drum identify the correct fluid. Hazardous waste must be disposed of lawfully. Environmental contamination at the yard results in a $500.00 fine.

What are the rules for holding bays?

The first four hours in a holding bay are free. After four hours, the cost is $50.00 per day. No vessel over 32 feet will be allowed in the holding bays at any time as they block lift access for larger vessels.

What environmental standards apply?

The yard operates a Marina Wash Treatment System that captures and filters all wash water before it enters the sewage system. We use only environmentally friendly boat soap for cleaning. These standards are not optional. They apply to all owners, contractors, and visitors on the premises.

What happens if I miss my appointment?

If you cannot make your appointment, contact us as soon as possible. Travel lift appointments require specialized equipment, trained operators, and dedicated time slots. Advance notice allows us to offer your slot to another customer on the waiting list. During busy seasons, it may take several weeks to reschedule.
